Boy in the City Night – Digital Study -Tracing 3/4 – 12 june 2020
Along with The Dancer & The Girl Sitting On The Stairs, Boy in the City Night is a digital art study I made back when I started digital painting 🤓. Thus, let’s discover some of the process of this artwork.
The Boy’s Reference
Here is the reference photography I chose. I liked the contrats between the darkness and the light, and was intrigued by the background city lights.
I wondered how I will make them (blurry yet flashy) and started by studying the shadows.

Between Lights & Shadows
I can’t stress enough how studying the lights and dark areas of a reference helps you apply the colors on the next phase.
✍🏼 This way, you will improve your understanding of contrasts & tones.
The Boy’s Background
The colors were not difficult to apply on The Boy (thanks to my shadow tip). However, here came the challenging part… How would I paint the city lights 🌆?
The answer was quite natural: I had to give them some glow so that we could keep their blurry-flashy effect and stick the most to the reference.
The Boy’s Result
Finally! I could appreciate the stunning resemblance and the lively result I made!
The city lights were a challenge but I learned a lot during this session 💡.
Thoughts on The Boy
Also, Tracing was for me a huge help and a “teacher” for my first digital art studies. If you’re interested, read my article ‘Is tracing a drawing cheating‘ where I explain my point of view on this controversial subject 🙅♀️. You’re welcome!
